Logan Botanic Garden

At the south-western tip of Scotland lies Logan, the country’s most exotic garden. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, southern hemisphere plants flourish in this plantsman’s paradise.

Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens

The estate of Drumlanrig lies 14 miles north of Dumfries.

Home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry since its completion in 1691. The historic scottish castle, constructed from local pink sandstone and set on a hill (Drum) at the end of a long (lang) ridge (rig), affords visitors beautiful views across Nithsdale to rolling hills and woodlands.

The castle externally has graceful curves of the horseshoe staircase and the arches of the lower colonnade contrast with the hard straight lines of the main structure; the rich stone carvings over the windows of the Castle further help to soften the sense of fortress severity.

Whilst the castle internally is brimming with treasures; fine paintings and furniture, carvings, tapestries and silverware dating from a bygone age of oppulence.

Mid Devon Show Exhibit Discussion Meeting

Several ideas were put forward at the discussion group meeting recently held. A small group of members met to formulate a plan of how our exhibit would look to go with the the theme of this year's show - Food & Farming. We have a corner plot in the garden and flower marquee as in previous years. An outline of the plan is that we are going to use a pair of old cart wheels, a milk churn, an old gate and scarecrow. These items have kindly been donated to be used by members.

We are still in need of plants in pots, a couple of straw or hay bails and flowers and foliage.

The next discussion meeting will take place on 9th July.

May Coffee Morning & Plant Sale

A good crowd of members and visitors made the coffee morning and plant sale a successful one for the Club.

A variety of plants were on sale and a brisk trade ensued with bargains to be made. The bric-a-brac table also had a variety of items for sale.

Fuchsias for the Members Plant Growing Competition for the Autumn Flower Show were on sale. A pretty semi-double bush variety called Paula Jane sold out on the day.

Norma, Sue and Olive were the ladies who provided the refreshments:

Garden Visit to Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park

Glorious sunshine bathed the gardens on the day of our visit to The Royal Landscape of Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park. Colour and perfume were to be found around every corner of this delightful garden.

The Club's recent visit was in some respect an achievement to be remembered. Last year we had to cancel our visit due to lack of support. This year we did manage to attract a good number of members and friends keen to take the long journey to what is a magnificent garden.

The Savill Garden was created by Sir Eric Savill, grand master of the woodland garden in the 1930's. Since then the garden has grown with the encouragement of the Royal Family, many of whom are keen gardeners. It is an all year reound garden but during spring is a riot of colour with rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias in abundance. So it was for us with many species releasing a sweet scented smell in the strong sunshine and high temperature experienced throughout the day.

A few members managed to take the footpath leading to the Valley Garden, which is also situated within Windsor Great Park in what is known as Virginia Water. Here they were able to explore the magnificence of the Punch Bowl, an area planted on a hillside overlooking a lake with hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas, creating a mass of colour.

For refreshments and garden shop members were able to enjoy these facilities housed in the architectural wonder of the award winning Savill Building with its modern sweeping roof which blends superbly with the landscape.

In addition the day featured a plant sale promoted by many well known garden centres and growers from all parts of the country.

In all our visit was a superb experience, one not to have been missed.
