Dumfries - our base

The bridges of Dumfries provided a good destination for an after dinner walk.

A red sky at night........ as the saying goes!

Afternoon Tea at Cally Palace

The Cally Palace Hotel - the venue for our delightful surprise afternoon tea

A wave from all but one of the tour members....

Cally Gardens

"Cally Gardens is a grand sight; thousands of species grown as well as you will ever see them, grouped harmoniously by a nurseryman with the eye of an artist - and the spirit of an adventurer."

Logan Botanic Garden

At the south-western tip of Scotland lies Logan, the country’s most exotic garden. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, southern hemisphere plants flourish in this plantsman’s paradise.

Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens

The estate of Drumlanrig lies 14 miles north of Dumfries.

Home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry since its completion in 1691. The historic scottish castle, constructed from local pink sandstone and set on a hill (Drum) at the end of a long (lang) ridge (rig), affords visitors beautiful views across Nithsdale to rolling hills and woodlands.

The castle externally has graceful curves of the horseshoe staircase and the arches of the lower colonnade contrast with the hard straight lines of the main structure; the rich stone carvings over the windows of the Castle further help to soften the sense of fortress severity.

Whilst the castle internally is brimming with treasures; fine paintings and furniture, carvings, tapestries and silverware dating from a bygone age of oppulence.
